The Territory

Monferrato, the “Next Big Thing” in the winemaking region of Piedmont

A region rich in history, culture and wine traditions. Known for its colorful rolling landscapes, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014 and offers a genuine intersection of authentic natural beauty, historic architecture and gastronomy.

Renowned for its fine artisanal wine production, the Monferrato area is marked by charming medieval villages, imposing castles and ancient wine cellars, the “Infernot,” carved into the white marl.

Thanks to its strategic location, Monferrato is easily accessible from major northern Italian cities, such as Turin, Milan and Genova, making it an ideal tourist destination for a relaxing getaway with sports and outdoor activities.

The Pietra da Cantoni Caves: a hidden heritage of wonders

Un Patrimonio sotto i nostri piedi, destinato a meravigliare.

Hidden in the heart of Monferrato are 10,000-square-meter underground “cathedrals” that originated from the ancient Piedmont Sea, which covered these lands in the Miocene period, more than 17 million years ago.

These are the stone caves of the Castello di Uviglie winery, excavated by the inhabitants of Monferrato over the course of more than 1,200 years. Following a major revaluation project, they have been made accessible and devoted to the aging of Metodo Classico. A unique path to delve into the identity of a territory through centuries of art, culture and agricultural tradition.

The imposing marl walls, composed of clay, limestone and sand, tell the geological story of Monferrato. Here, naturally consistent temperature, dark and humid conditions allow the sparkling wines to evolve and acquire their highly distinctive aromatic characteristics and crisp perlage.

White Marl

A soil that nurtures wine, landscape, and architecture.

The white marl of Monferrato is a rock composed of limestone and clay, a typical feature of once-submerged soils, which for centuries have identified the zones most suitable for viticulture. Its excellent drainage capacity prevents water stagnation, allowing low yields and very high-quality grapes.

As a result, the unique terroir of our vineyards infuses the wines with character, freshness, sapidity, complexity and elegance, binding them deeply to the terroir.

Marl has also strongly influenced local architecture. The squared blocks extracted from the extraordinary underground cave, known as “Pietra da Cantoni,” have been used for centuries to build churches, farmhouses, and villages, still giving the typical bright appearance of the landscape and village streets and making the area even more fascinating and distinctive.

The Infernots: extraordinary places made by ordinary people

The village of Uviglie is located right in the heart of what is called the “Monferrato degli Infernot.” The Infernots are picturesque underground cellars that have contributed to the territory's mention among UNESCO World Heritage Sites, hand-carved into the marl subsoil by the inhabitants of the past.
